Review: 1/144 HGUC MSN-001A1 Delta Plus (Daban)

The Delta Plus is the semi-mass produced prototype that was supposed to be the next-gen Zeta mass production suit. But in reality the Delta Plus is almost just a face-lifted Zeta Gundam. It uses technology from 0087 (time of Gryps conflict).

It looks really cool (I still prefer Delta Gundam) when it came out in the OVA. You can really tell that this was what the Hyaku Shiki supposed to be, just not gold.

Part 1: Box, Runners, and Manual

Part 2: Head Unit

Part 3: Torso Unit

Part 4: Arm Unit

It can only go 90 degrees at the elbow, though possible to have double joints in the design, Bandai dropped the idea. Thus here’s what we have with Daban.

Part 5: Waist Unit

Part 6: Leg Unit

As seen above, the legs uses the old ball joint connection. Though having a separate module in the legs connection that can add twisting on the legs, Bandai has forgone it. It was added here because of transformation requirements with Bandai’s partsformer/swapping approach. Again, Daban and other China Gunpla manufacturers copy as-is.
You can only bend this much. Not that bad at all.

Part 7: Weapons and Add-ons

Beam Rifle

This is the same gun supplied to ReZELs. If you have watched the OVA, the Delta Plus can’t handle high powered beam guns as seen when it fired the Beam Magnum. Firing Unicorn’s gun pretty much destroyed Delta’s firing arm. This is just a bog-standard beam rifle.

Shield + 2-Barrel Grenade Launchers + Beam Cannon + Beam Saber

Here are all the add ons on the shield. Middle nozzle is the canon. The next row to it are the grenades and then the two Beam Saber mounts.

Part Formers and Extras

Like the other Delta units, Delta Plus uses parts former approach or in normal terms, parts swapping in order to transform to waverider. This requires swapping out the shoulder armor and the heel, to be replace by the parts as seen above. Then connecting them to a different core.

Part 8: Romeo 08 Ready to Launch!

Part 9: Fake Gundam!

Waverider Mode

Partsformer not Transformer/Transformable

Being an HGUC release, the Delta Plus will be short on some details. This release being a transformable mobile suit would have some more articulation taken out of it for the sake of its gimmicks.

The arms still moves 90 degrees sideways and pivots at the upper arms. Though, not shown the arm can twist upwards thanks to the straight peg joint.

The elbow joint is not double jointed, and the picture above would be the maximum movement you can get out of it.

The legs on the other hand somehow redeems the upper body’s lack of articulation.

Feet can be bended as much as seen above. That is almost at 90 degrees.

The whole leg can move forwards fully at 90 degrees without much hindrance due to short front skirt armors.

The knees are somehow double jointed, but can’t do a full bend.

Legs bending sideways, not at much as Delta has some stoppers on its thigh-waist connection. Can be modified though.

On the waverider transformation, do take note that most of the these transformable suits in the Universal Century timeline have these intricate or complicated transformations as compared to other universes. The Dela Plus’ transformation to waverider mode is one of these. First seen used by Zeta Gundam. This is no Wing Gundam that just twists and bends then becomes neo-bird mode.

Looking back, here are some of the effect parts and parts former parts included in Delta Plus

And after all the swap outs, here’s what left of the mobile suit mode

Other than that rather silly/tedious transformation. It looks neat.

  • Looks great.
  • Parts-form quite nicely.
  • PS plastic.

  • Transformation can be bothersome at times.
  • Limited upper body articulation.

Though quite limited in the articulation, you can still have some great poses with the Delta Plus. Looking through the internet, most hobbyist have custom painted their Delta Plus to various colorways. If had the time, I’d probably paint one in gold regardless of already having a Delta Gundam.
